Muslim School in Siem Reap, Cambodia

My recent travels with my wife revealed a very dire and unfortunate circumstances amongst the Cambodian Muslim community. The majority of them are underprivileged and struggling. There is a school and mosque situated in Siem Reap (the site of the famous Ankor Watt temples) that is in desperate need of support from our communities. It has 100 promising students ranging in age from 6 to 16. Despite their commitment to learn and grow, they do not have the necessary supplies. School books are scarce. They do not even have copies of the Qur'an. Alhamdulillah, I have sent an initial Quran shipment to the Imam from Singapore. However, their needs are still not met. Second-hand English textbooks (primary and high school), Islamic books, and even clothes, would serve as a foundation in increasing the quality of their educational, spiritual, and personal lives.

I can only but relay to you the indomitable spirit of this community. The Muslims in Cambodia are no strangers to hardship. They witnessed severe oppression under the Khmer Rouge, which eroded their numbers, but they continue to be passionate about creating strong, Muslim communities. Though they would be grateful for all the help that they can get right now, their ultimate goal is to increase the quality of their lives through self-improvement and personal growth.

Positive Mental Attitude

Positive Mental Attitude

1. When Snake is alive, Snake eats Ants.

When Snake is dead, Ants eat Snake.

Time can turn at any time.

Don't neglect anyone in your life.......

2. Never make the same mistake twice,

There are so many new ones,

Try a different one each day.

3. A good way to change someone's attitude is to change your own.

Because, the same sun that melts butter, also hardens clay!

Life is as we think, so think beautifully.

4. Life is just like a sea, we are moving without an end.

Nothing stays with us,

What remain are just the memories of some people who touched us as Waves.

5. Whenever you want to know how rich you are?

Never count your currency,

Just try to Drop a Tear and count how many hands reach out to WIPE that- that is true richness.

6. Heart tells the eyes see less, because you see and I suffer lot.

Eyes replied, feel less because you feel and I cry a lot.

7. Never change your originality for the sake of others,

Because no one can play your role better than you;

So be yourself, because whatever you are, YOU are the best.

8. Baby mosquito came back after 1st time flying.

His dad asked him "How do you feel?"

He replied "It was wonderful, everyone was clapping for me!"

Now that's a Positive Attitude.

Hyder Gulam transcript

Thank you very much for the award, La Trobe University. I’ve got a very short speech because I do note that we have a number of other recipients. In particular I’ve got very fond memories of the Agora and that my particular law teachers who were very helpful for me, John Wishart, Heather King and Jianfu Chen who I understand is now head of the Law School. I would like to thank my family for without family you are nothing. In particular I want to point out the special contribution to my life of a person that’s very dear to me, and that’s Peter Barnett, and you’ll see him third row down on the left hand side to your right. Peter is almost eighty years old and is currently writing a book on a very famous Turkish sufi saint and he’s travelled to Turkey last year to research that. His patroned the City Circle which aims to help young Muslims be aware of other ideas from other communities. He is a role model for me in terms of his community service and dedication.

Now, why am I committed to community service? In Islam, the prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him, taught us three things continue to benefit a person after their death. The first is charity he has given, which continues to benefit others. Number two – beneficial knowledge, which he has left behind, such as a book, authored or taught, and Number three are any supplications made on his behalf by his children. For me, community service is one of those ongoing legacies which in turn benefits my forefathers in whose footsteps I humbly follow. With that, thank you very much La Trobe University
